Okie Talkers
Hey y’all!
Anyone familiar with the term “Okie Talker”? Well I am now, Oklahomans talk and talk and talk.
I hope y’all had a great Thanksgiving! I sure did! We ate at one of the Bishop’s houses, and quickly left for a lesson (the mission President gave us 2 hours for Thanksgiving dinner, we took like 20 minutes, we are so freaking busy here haha) We taught a lady named Alma! She is just the sweetest thing, and in the middle of the lesson, Sister Soderborg mouthed to me “December 24th.” and nodded her head. When I say that I literally heard my heart pounding, I mean it haha. I knew exactly what I needed to do, so I asked her if she would be baptized. She said yes!! We both cried, and it was so happy. We may move her date to January 7th (whooo my birthday!!) because we want members to be there to support. That was only our first lesson with her, so I wasn’t expecting to extend a baptism invitation, but hey the Lord knew she was ready:)
We now have 3 of our friends on date! Working on 2 more this week!
We had to stop teaching Brandon, honestly we didn’t really know what happened. He was reading the Book of Mormon, he even came to church, he said he was open to learning about baptism, but when we extended the invitation and a date, he said he needed to pray about it. Then on Sunday he didn’t show up for Church and said that he appreciated us, but didn’t want to leave his church. Sad day for us, but he has his agency, and we love him just the same.
Highlights:
-Started teaching a squirrel whisperer, he literally has huge squirrels sitting on him while we teach him. His name is James.
-My trainers made me run after someone by myself to ask if they would like to hear a message, (they said it would help my confidence, of course they were within sight and sound) One lady was a Reverend, and we had a good chat. The other lady saw my tag and ran away from me so that was awesome…
-Had every single lesson fall through on Wednesday (we had 5 scheduled) My comps and I were kind of emo and cried but it’s whatever.
-Hit my one month mark!! Of course we went to Braums to celebrate. Pumpkin-chocolate malts are just the best haha.
-Spend some quality time with the elderly playing bingo! They gamble with nickels and it is just the funniest thing ever. Makes my day every every time.
-Spoke in church for one ward, and said the opening prayer in another, so plenty of action for me haha.
-My comps and I draw pictures for each other every week, it’s quite the ordeal. Sister Okie drew Morgan Wallen and Sister Sody drew a cowboy hat, but we laughed cuz it looks more like Noah’s ark…
- my comps exposed that I play the piano at district counsel, which is just awful cuz I have a hard time reading the notes, i just know what chords sound good together and I like to play around at the apartment, so now people are asking me to play piano at meetings and Im stressin
My spiritual thought is inspired by a recent convert. She’s recovering from alcohol abuse, and we just had a feeling to visit her. She was saying how she feels like a terrible mother, wife, and member of the church because she can’t make enough time for God in her life. She wasn’t going to start drinking again, but she just felt like she couldn’t do it anymore, and she was getting overwhelmed.
Hearing this, I remembered President Russell M. Nelson’s address to young adults this past May, “Choices for Eternity.” He talks about labels that the world gives us-good and bad- and that Satan tries to label us to separate God’s children.
I told her a little bit about the talk, and invited her to read it. I promised her that if she focused on her most important label, (a beautiful daughter of God and Desciple of Christ) that God will help her with living up to her other labels (mother, wife, member of the church). We helped her come up with a plan to help her spend more time with God, and to nurture her spirit.
My invitation to y’all is to read President Nelson’s address, and to ponder how you can prioritze your label as a son or daughter of God in your life. How does a Child of God dress, speak, treat others? What can you do this week to fufill that title? I would love to hear your ideas!!
Well, that’s it for this week! I love getting emails from y’all, updates and whatever you wanna tell me. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do/pray for.
I love y’all so much! Have an awesome week!!
Sister Jenni<3
